Testimonials from the current Co-organiser crew

Rachel Tropea, Co-organiser

For the past year and a bit I’ve been a proud member of the Australasia Preserves Co-organiser group. I’m proud of the scale and quality of work we’ve been able to do together with our members on the smell of an oily rag. This includes coordinating virtual meetups with members with presentations on a variety of fascinating topics. The co-organisers meet regularly, usually after our virtual meetups. As well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of Australasia Preserves such as administering the forum and new memberships, we discuss topics for meetups, our website, blog, twitter account, and new ways to engage with our members. We each bring something different to the conversation in terms of our talents and passions, but we all bring a spirit of cooperation, warmth and good humour. I really enjoy our get togethers and always look forward to speaking with my co-organisers from whom I’ve learnt so much and whom I consider my friends. So much so that I’ve signed up for another year of digital preservation advocacy and knowledge sharing across New Zealand and Australia with Australasia Preserves.

My involvement as a co-organiser with Australasia Preserves has been personally positive and professionally reaffirming. In my case valuable insight and awareness gained more than compensates for the level of contribution. The co-organiser committee as a mirror and stalwart champion of the mission of Australasia Preserves provides a space and platform for shared experience and enquiry with a focus upon strengthening and advancing skills and knowledge in digital preservation. This is achieved by welcoming digital preservation professionals at all levels and areas of interest, from across Australasia, to join in and to share challenges and successes in conversation, to listen and learn. In all these ways we, through our participation, contribute, and as a co-organiser I get to help to support and nurture that spirit. Awesome.

Matthew Burgess, Co-organiser

Being a part of Australasia Preserves in any capacity is a rewarding experience, whether as an attendee or presenter at an event, taking part in online discussions or as part of a working group. It has been a pleasure to be part of the co-organiser group, working with professionals from across Australasia as part of a dedicated community of practice. With a casual approach, there is no pressure as a co-organiser to commit to anything you cannot fit into your schedule and plenty of opportunity to brainstorm ideas and run with them.

Andrea Goethals, Co-organiser

Being a co-organiser of Australasia Preserves has been a great experience for me both personally and professionally. I don’t think I’ve ever been part of a group as welcoming and open-minded. If one of us has an idea for something to try, the group not only listens and offers encouragement, but usually volunteers to help test out the idea. That spirit of warmth and acceptance makes this an especially good opportunity for people who are new to organising groups and want a chance to get experience planning meetups, blog posts, the communications, and everything else that goes into organising Australasia Preserves. Personally I have appreciated an extra opportunity to get to know my friendly peers in Australia outside of the regular meetups, and am happy to continue in the group for another year.

Jaye Weatherburn, Co-organiser

Being a co-organiser of Australasia Preserves has proven to be such valuable work. My favourite part of being involved in this community is meeting new people doing amazing work in digital stewardship in our region, and helping to provide more connections between people so we can continue learning and growing together.
